My epic smackdown or the mighty and majestic Oxford English Dictionary continues! The OED says the first time the word "mammoth" (in any form) appeared in print was in 1692. I just found my third from before that date! That alone will be worth the price of my book.
Boo, and further, yah.
PS - They know of three unpublished instances before then. I know of four.
